Covid-19 haiged, kellel on liiga madal D3 vitamiini tase veres, surevad sagedamini liiga kiiresti tekkiva põletiku tõttu, eriti kopsudes. Liigse põletiku kutsuvad esile signaalmolekulid tsütokiinid, milliseid toodavad immuunsüsteemi rakud. D3 vitamiin mängib tähtsat rolli immuunsüsteemi moduleerimises (toimete korrigeerimises vajalikus suunas), muudab regulatoorsete T-lümfotsüütide aktiivsust, reguleerib tsütokiinide tootmise hulka. Selle tõttu D3 vitamiin peaks olema väga vajalik võitluseks Covid-19 haigusega seotud põletikuga ja peatama üleliigse põletikulise ataki teket (72,221,222,226).
